Ear wax, what does it do, and why do we have problems?
What is ear wax?
Ear wax is produced by glands in the ear to naturally lubricate the ear canal, made up of dead flattened cells, cerumen, sebum and various foreign substances, cosmetics creams and dirt, it is acidic and has antibacterial properties.
Symptoms of ear wax problems?
-
Loss of hearing
-
Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
-
Irritation and itching
-
Pain in ear
-
Feeling of fullness in the ear canal
What does it do?
The main function is to clean the ear canal, trap dirt and debris to stop it from entering the inner part of the ear, it also inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi.
Who is more susceptible?
There are certain age ranges and conditions that make it more likely that you will suffer from this condition, age certainly has a role to play, those aged 50 and over and older men tend to have more hair in their ear canals, this makes the wax harder and more difficult to be naturally removed. In narrow or deformed ear canals wax can be more predisposed to impaction, certain skin conditions such as atopic eczema or psoriasis also can cause impaction.
Why do I get ear wax problems?
Wax is normally removed from the ear by the movement of the jaw but if this natural elimination is disrupted then wax can become impacted in the ear canal, using foreign object like cotton buds to try and remove the wax can further exacerbate the problem.
Self help
If you are suffering from ear wax build up, dry, itchy and painful ears or some loss of hearing you can pop a couple of drops of olive oil into the affected ear to soften the wax.
We do not recommend poking or prodding cotton buds into the ear canal as this can force the ear wax further down the canal.
